Our Impact
In South Africa, NSI people played a major role in interrupting state capture and now, helping to open the door to meaningful government reform.
Our Projects
NSI's purpose is to provide evidence-based policy and applied research on complex problems of government in emergent democracies. We currently run five research programmes. All adopt a common approach characterised by: (i) a focus on institutions and how to build them or to improve how they work depending on local conditions (hence the importance of law, history, culture) (ii) research that brings theory and practise together, both in-country and comparative research (iii) building partnerships with stakeholders to elaborate reform agendas and (iv) by providing technical support to those who must implement the reform agendas that we help shape.
Our Aim
The New South Institute (NSI) is not simply a research institute and policy advisory - though we are excellent at that. The NSI believes that people with passion can change the world by building democracies and capable governments - especially in fragile democracies that live with challenges of state capture, social fragmentation and civil war. This is what we call the New South.
