Stephen Gelb is Senior Research Associate at ODI in London, and was previously Lead on Private Sector Development. He has a PhD in economics. Before joining ODI, he did economic research and policy analysis in South Africa for thirty years, advising the President and Cabinet Ministers, and consulting for many multilateral and bilateral agencies. He has written on a wide range of issues, including growth and macroeconomic policy, foreign direct investment, inequality, and political economy in South Africa; and foreign direct investment and global value chains in manufacturing and in services in Africa and Asia. His current research focusses on corporate corruption in South Africa; on enterprise development in African cities; and on diaspora finance and migrant-linked businesses.
